Enemy of Mine

Ever present,
The feeling of betrayal.
I ask why into the silence and it is swallowed.

No words spoken, only thoughts fluttering like sheets in a breeze.
Motionless one moment, then rippling, snapping to life the next,
Again asking why, why, why?

Laughter for so long is now gasps,
Breath severed, a hand clenched around my throat.
My mind struggles to comprehend the reason for the finality.

The bond broken, shredded to pulp.
Gaping shards of a mighty monument,
Memories in rubble.
The suddenness like an executioners’ ax,
Severing all life, ceasing all breath, any rhythm of the heart.
