I participated in Mediums’ Pub Crawl and noticed new writers asking questions about the basics, looking for some tips and where to find information. It brought me back to the first few articles I’d published on Medium and the anticipation I felt hitting the “Publish” button for the first time.

You want everything to be perfect, or at least as good as you can be. For me, it was treading into new territory and putting myself out there. Publishing your writing online may be a first for some of you or at least something fairly new.

But you (we) did it, or you will do it.

You can make a good first impression by following some rules and taking advantage of a few easy-to-use tools. One of my first articles did well because I took this.

Let’s get started.

Review the Basics

Begin with the title.

The Title is the Gateway

The say is, “You never get a second chance to make a first impression,” and that sums up your title. Your title has got to pull the reader in. If it doesn’t, they’re gone.
