New to Medium? Here are Some Basics.

Good writing and good presentation are essential.

I love reading new writers on Medium and when someone claps or follows me, I reciprocate by taking the time to read their work. If I like what I see and read, I “Follow” them back.

What do I like?

I like seeing a good title, one that is not clickbaity and accurately reflects the subject of the article. Your title is like your face, it’s what everyone sees first. Don’t use a title about your international vacation and then start talking about your ex.

I like good writing.

This means good grammar, paragraphs, and spelling. Pieces with poor grammar and misspelled words are signs that you haven’t proofread your work. If you can’t be bothered putting the time into your writing, you can’t expect people to take the time to read it.

People will say: Next! And move on.

Presentation is also important.

Are paragraphs too long? Or are there no paragraphs at all? Ouch! Long paragraphs will scare readers away. The brain says, “Too much information” and clicks to the next article.

And long paragraphs on phones are twice as bad.
