I learned what the word “boycott” meant at an early age.
It started with green grapes. My mother explained that the people who picked them were not treated well and until they were, we would not support that industry.
I then learned a little about migrant workers and the people who employed them. They sounded like the bad guys, and indeed they were, paying a pittance and providing harsh and unsafe conditions for workers.
Grapes were the first things I was deprived of, but not the last.
And what not to eat and not to buy came along with instructions to turn off the lights, not emphasized back in the 60s and 70s, and a running commentary on the evils of one-use plastic.
“Where do people think it’s going anyway?” mom would ask.
And right she was.
But I digress…
